A Trailblazer in Portraiture
Kehinde Wiley, born in Los Angeles in 1977, has gained international acclaim for his unique ability to juxtapose contemporary subjects with the grandeur of classical European portraiture. The Rees Visionary Award
The Rees Visionary Award, named after Amref’s founder Dr. Thomas Rees, honors individuals who have significantly influenced the dialogue surrounding African and Black art. Emily Correale, Director of Amref Health Africa, emphasized that this award recognizes artists who are changing narratives and creating exceptional work that educates and inspires viewers during challenging times. Wiley expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I am grateful to be recognized with the Rees Visionary Award for my artistic practice and my founding of Black Rock Global Arts Foundation.” His foundation aims to support new artistic creation while inciting change in global discourse about Africa today.
ArtBall 2024: A Celebration of Culture
